YOUR WORKFLOW
Export the relevant tracks from your DAW as a .mid or .midi file. A clean performance is easier to read after conversion.
Run the conversion to produce two files: a printable PDF and a compressed MusicXML score (.mxl) for notation editing.
Compare the first measures with the performance. Check the meter, rests and rhythmic grouping, especially in passages played freely.
Choose MusicXML if you plan to edit the score in a notation program. Choose PDF if you want to read or print the generated score as it stands.
MIDI records note starts and lengths. To write those events on a staff, the converter has to choose rhythmic values and rests. Expressive timing can produce ties or short rests that need editing.
A MIDI performance does not usually contain the original engraving, voice assignments or enharmonic spelling. Treat the output as a first notation draft and review it before sharing with players.
